The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at IIT Hyderabad is unique in India, being
the only IIT with a combined department for Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Established in 2008 with
with 30 undergraduate students, MAE has grown to include 36 Faculty members, 1 Emeritus Professor, 16 staff, 229
undergraduates, 144 postgraduates, and over 98 PhD students.
Initially focused on Mechanical Engineering, the Department expanded to include Aerospace Engineering to leverage Hyderabad's position as a aerospace research hub, collaborating extensively with industries and research laboratories such as DRDO, ISRO, Honeywell, Hyundai, MEITY, Sandvik, MRF, BHEL and many more.
Today, MAE faculty and students work together on nearly half of the industry funded projects. Additionally, MAE has developed India's first metal 3D printed facility, led by Prof. S. Surya Kumar. There are research facilities such as a split hopkinson pressure bar setup for different ratings built by Prof. Syed N. Khaderi, the moment of inertia setup built by Prof. C P Vyasarayani apart from other major facilities in various fields by other faculty members.
MAE offers a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, a minor in Aerospace Engineering, a minor in Robotics, and
honors and double major options. The curriculum emphasizes project work and hands-on learning, ensuring
students grasp theoretical fundamentals and practical applications. The honors program allows
undergraduates to engage in research, and a collaboration with various foreign universities Japan, Australia, Germany, USA, etc. offer summer research internships. At the postgraduate level, MAE offers M. Tech programs in Mechanics and Design, Thermo-Fluid
Engineering, Integrated Design and Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering, and a new online M.Tech in
Computational Mechanics.
MAE coordinates the interdisciplinary M.Tech in Electric Vehicle Technology and
contributes to other multidisciplinary programs. International collaborations include a student exchange with
Hokkaido University and joint doctoral programs with Swinburne and Deakin Universities. MAE fosters an
entrepreneurial spirit, with notable startups like Pure Energy, co-founded by Dr. Nishant Dongari, and Acausal Automation Pvt Ltd founded by Prof. R Prasanth Kumar for the development of automation and robotics products and services for industry and consumer applications.
During the pandemic, the company and the Department played a key role in the technological advancements like prototype development of automated microscopes, and product commercialization. We invite you to explore the dynamic MAE department, and we are confident you’ll find exciting opportunities.
Best wishes for the placement season!
